2 Timothy – Entrusted with the Promise of Life

For 8 weeks, we will have the joy of journeying through Paul’s final letter to Timothy.   2 Timothy is a short, but extremely personal and passionate prison letter in which Paul encourages, commands and urges Timothy to pick up the baton of the Gospel and to continue the race in proclaiming it.

Paul opens his letter by reminding us what his apostolic mission is about: it is, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus (1:1). Throughout the letter Paul will be unpacking what this promise of life is which he is entrusting to Timothy. It is the message and hope that has now been revealed through the appearing of our Saviour, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel (1:10). It is this message:
I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher (1:11). It is this message for which Paul is suffering (1:12). It is this message Paul is calling Timothy to guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you – guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us (1:14).
