iThemba means ‘hope’. Our vision is for children from under-resourced communities in the Southern Peninsula of Cape Town to be provided with the best possible intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual foundation for further education – giving them hope for their future. iThemba School opened its doors in January 2012. Our focus will be on providing a high-quality, nurturing environment of the standard that would satisfy any parent by providing the following services to the children:
- Quality pre-school education
- Nutritious meals: breakfast and lunch
- After care facilities
- Extracurricular activities
- Health monitoring and education
Two meals will be provided daily to ensure good nutrition and over-all well-being for the children. Our plan is to start with a single class of 15-20 children in a grade 000 class (age 3-4) and grow the school by adding a class each year until we have reached Grade R in 2014. This would mean the school starts with something small and manageable, yet aims for the first class to remain with us for a full three years before primary school. The
centre will be open the entire day to cater for working parents and facilitate parents seeking employment. There will be a high-quality educational curriculum in the mornings run by the ECD teacher followed by other activities in the afternoons run by volunteers from St. Peters Church (e.g. art, music, movement, craft classes and outings) under the teacher’s supervision. Two meals and snacks will be provided daily to ensure good nutrition and over-all wellbeing for the children.
We also plan to investigate being a base for learnership programs (where teachers work full-time at an ECD centre whilst training). The underpinning values and ethos of the school will be Christian and it will maintain close ties with St. Peters Church whilst being run independently.
