Lent devotionals

Pancake day and Lent are just around the corner…

Pancake day, properly known as Shrove Tuesday, is coming up next week, 5th March. It isn’t wildly popular here in South Africa, but to my mind it’s a great excuse for a thoroughly unhealthy pancake supper and the fun of trying to toss the pancakes!

After all that indulgence, the season of Lent traditionally begins the day after, properly known as Ash Wednesday. This is when some of us try to give up something for the 40 days until Easter…most often chocolate it seems.

This year we are suggesting that you consider starting something up for Lent instead…something to help you, and your family, remember and enjoy the deeper reason Lent exists for 40 days before the Easter weekend arrives.

We are promoting two Lent devotionals this year, one for grown ups and one for the family, each containing daily thoughts for Lent.

‘This is a book to savour! Take it, read it slowly, and drink in its Christ-saturated truth.’ Gary Millar, Principal, Queensland Theological College

Delight in the beauty of Christ afresh this Easter. Some of the richest prophecies about the cross of Chris can be found in Isaiah 52 – 53 (the last of the ‘Servant Songs’). These thought-provoking meditations will take you through these familiar yet extraordinary chapters, along with hymns and prayers from the riches of church history. Prepare your heart with 47 days of short, stirring reflections that invite you to gaze once more at Christ in all his beauty.

And for families:

Ed Drew to the rescue! This book makes shared family Bible times so easy.’ COLIN BUCHANAN, Singer/Songwriter

Celebrate the limitless wonder of Easter with this flexible, easy-to-use family devotional. Walk together through Luke’s Gospel to discover why the account of Jesus’ death and resurrection is the most amazing story ever told. This discussion-based resource includes differentiated questions for 3-4s, 5-7s, 7-12s, teens & adults. At just ten minutes each, these devotions are an achievable joy, not an unrealistic burden.

For the Wonder of Easter there is also a companion podcast, which will actually lead you and your family through 15 of the most important of the readings from the book, which really takes any fear or hard work out of the process!!

We hope these resources will be a great asset at this time of year as you start up something for Jesus rather than giving up something for Jesus!!
