Personal Evangelism – The what, why & how!
1: What is personal evangelism?
In a nutshell, evangelism is telling others about the King of God’s kingdom, Jesus. We can do this in many different ways. The word ‘evangel’ comes from the Greek word Euanggelionand refers to the ‘bringer of good news.’ Personal evangelism seeks to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to others so that they can respond to his claims.
2: Why should we do personal evangelism? For at least three biblical reasons…
2.1: It’s the most loving thing to do– in the gospel of Mark, 12:31, when asked what the most important commandment is, Jesus responds: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength”… “The second is this, love your neighbour as yourself.”
2.2: It is a command– In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus’ commission to his disciples was, “Go & make disciples of all nations”. Yet, the reason why is sometimes overlooked. Jesus says, “All authority in heaven & earth has been given to me…Therefore…Go & make disciples of all nations…” (Matt 28:19, NIV). Jesus is proclaiming his Lordship, He is the King, and the Judge with all authority in heaven & earth. People need to hear and understand this in order to respond to him in repentance and faith!
2.3: Gospel partnership pleases our Master – When we evangelize we meet Jesus’ expectations. Like the parable of the Ten Minas in Luke’s gospel, followers of Jesus are called to put their Master’s investments to work so that it increases – this is a warning to not be complacent with the gospel message but to put to work that which belongs to our Master.
3: How should we personally evangelize?
In the past most people had some general understanding of the Christian faith, or at least knew something about Jesus. However, today the average person is culturally tolerant & permissive – anything goes, “Your truth is your truth, my truth is my truth”. People’s view of Christianity has moved from having obstacles or objections to a view that dismisses Christianity as irrelevant.
|“The average person takes 2 years from the point of meaningful contact to placing their faith in Christ”(Honest evangelism: how to talk about Jesus even when it’s tough, 2015 Rico Tice).|
This means we need to take time & effort to build relationships with people so that we can understand their worldview & they can understand our faith.
Personal evangelism is to visibly and actively witness to a person about Jesus, so that they will repent & believe the good news, so that they are saved from the judgement of God!
But, isn’t sharing this good news daunting? Well…Yes & No… whilst you might feel unable to verbalize the gospel message well enough to your friend or family member, you can simply invite them to a place where they will hear the gospel preached or taught. In this way everyone can be part of evangelism at St Peters.
What can you do?Be the messenger of a beautiful, life changing message that takes people from darkness to light. – God does the converting.
Paul says, “My message and my preaching were not with wise, persuasive words but, with a demonstration of the Spirits power, so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom but on God’s power” (1 Corinthians 2:4, NIV).
